Conservation of Ruins
Martin Ashley Architects were involved with the conservation of the following ruins, Camber Castle, Bishops Waltham Palace, Bayham Abbey and Porchester. Adhering to the English Heritage Framework Agreement to survey and to carry out masonry conservation and structural stabilisation to wall surfaces of Grade 1or Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
The work included minimum intervention to the historic fabric with limited survey access to large and high structures, followed by rescheduling of works to wall tops following provision of scaffolding.
The scope of work comprised of:
Removal of plant matter following herbicide application, dry brushing to remove loose material, micro pinning to fragile elements, judicious brick and stone repairs to decayed walling, repointing to joints, mortar repairs and lime conservation of fragile elements, stitch repairs to ensure structural integrity, replacement of cement wall top capping with lime mortar caps and treatment of embedded ironwork.
