Our Work

Martin Ashley Architects offers a full range of services to owners and custodians of historic buildings, as well as clients looking for contextual new design.

As specialist historic building conservation architects and surveyors, our work is informed by a strongly held belief that the essence of conservation is to recognise and interpret the ongoing process of change that has occurred to buildings throughout their history, and to enable that process to continue in an informed and intelligent way. As practices and knowledge evolve, we look to respond to changing circumstances, use and technical standards. Our fundamental approach is one of respect: for the buildings in our care and for those craftsmen and builders who have gone before us, whose traditional crafts and skills can be harnessed today to protect historic buildings for future generations.

Our deep knowledge of historic buildings, materials and construction techniques also informs our new design work. We firmly believe that excellent modern design can sit extremely well in the context of older buildings, and we seek to produce enduring designs that respond sensitively to their surroundings.

Our services include: Repair and conservation | Adaptive change | Contextual new design | Building strategies and strategic planning | Quinquennial reports and condition surveys | Conservation Plans | Expert witness | Co-ordination of project teams and specialist consultants.
